History
This beautiful house came into being in 2011 as a private, large 2-storey home with 6 bedrooms, a garden, swimming pool and manager quarters. This unique home was crafted with love and has a western aesthetic quality with larger rooms, windows and attention to detail in the finishings and overall feel. The architect for Sangam was Suhasini Ayer, from Auroville, where she designed the well known Visitors Center. What makes this place exceptional is its extraordinary view of Holy Arunachala from the roof and its proximity to the Ramana Maharshi Ashram, which is just a 10
minute walk from the front door.
Present
In 2022, the vision for this lovely private residence expanded into the intention to create a space for groups to hold retreats. It became a reality in early 2023. The high standard of construction and design continued with the addition of more floors, guest rooms, living rooms and meeting areas. The rooms have been aesthetically finished with comfort and beauty in mind. The mid-level floor remains a private residence.
The Guest Rooms
The additional floors can accommodate up to 21 guests. There are 10 rooms available, 7 rooms with double occupancy, 2 with triple occupancy and one single. All have en-suite bathrooms other than the single which has a bathroom right beside it. We will guide you as to which would be the best rooms for your retreat, depending on your group size and how many rooms you want to use. Rooms you do not use will not be used by others. The house is exclusively for the use of each retreat.
The Meditative Spaces
Sangam Retreat House has a variety of exquisite shared spaces for group gatherings and for places to escape to, to be alone in contemplation and meditation. The top floor has a large tiled roof, which can hold more than 100 people for open air Satsang with a view of Arunachala. A cozy ground floor area overlooking the pool can also be used for gatherings of fewer people. A very comfortable living room with a shared refrigerator, kettle for making tea etc. is available for everyone’s use. The veranda, roof and areas in the garden around the swimming pool are lovely areas to be alone. The use of all these additional spaces are all included in your use of the house.
Types of Visitors
Sangam House is not a guest house, so does not accommodate occasional visitors. The people staying in the house are all retreat participants, attending the same retreat.
